Free printable word search themes
Each theme page has its own word list, tips and a ready-made preset. Every new puzzle picks a fresh mix of words from the list.
How to make a printable word search
- Choose your words. Pick a themed list, or choose “Your own words” and type up to 60 words: spelling lists, names for a party, vocabulary for a unit, or anything else.
- Choose a grid size. 10×10 suits young children and large print. 15×15 is the classic size. 18×18 and 20×20 hold more words and take longer to solve.
- Choose a difficulty. Easy hides words across and down. Medium adds diagonals. Hard adds backwards words in every direction.
- Press Print / Save PDF. Your browser’s print dialog opens. Choose a printer, or “Save as PDF” to keep a file. The answer key prints on page 2.
The preview above is exactly what prints. The site header, buttons and other parts of the page are left out of the printout automatically.
Every word placed, every word found once
Many word search generators quietly drop a word when the grid gets crowded, or leave a word hidden twice by accident. This maker places words with a backtracking search, so it tries other positions until the whole list fits. The filler letters are then checked so each word appears exactly once in the grid, and a short list of rude words is kept out of the random letters. If your list truly cannot fit, you see exactly which words were left out and how to fix it.
Word search difficulty levels
| Level | Directions | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Left to right, top to bottom | Young children, early readers, large print |
| Medium | Adds both forward diagonals | Older children and relaxed adult puzzles |
| Hard | All 8 directions, including backwards | Adults and puzzle fans who want a challenge |
Printing tips
- Set scaling to 100% or Actual size. Each sheet is laid out to fit one Letter or A4 page.
- Turn off “Headers and footers” in the print dialog if your browser adds the date and web address to the page edges.
- Tick Large print for bolder letters and a bigger word list. Pair it with a 10×10 or 12×12 grid for the easiest reading.
- Lowercase letters are easier for early readers; uppercase is the classic look.
Frequently asked questions
Is this word search maker free?
Yes. Make and print as many word searches as you like, for home, a classroom, a club or a care home. There is no account, no watermark and no limit.
Can I make a word search with my own words?
Yes. Pick “Your own words” in the word list menu, or just start typing in the words box. Put one word per line or separate them with commas, then press “Use these words”. Spaces and hyphens are allowed in a word; they are left out of the grid, so “ice cream” is hidden as ICECREAM.
What happens if a word does not fit?
The maker tells you straight away, above the preview, which word was left out and why: for example, a word longer than the grid, a repeated word, or a list with more letters than the grid can hold. Choose a bigger grid, remove some words, or switch to Medium or Hard so words can also run diagonally or backwards.
What do Easy, Medium and Hard mean?
They set the directions words can run in. Easy hides words left to right and top to bottom only. Medium adds diagonals. Hard uses all eight directions, so words can also read backwards, upwards and on reverse diagonals.
How do I print the word search with an answer key?
Leave “Answer key on page 2” ticked and press Print / Save PDF. Page 1 is the puzzle and page 2 shows the same grid with every word highlighted. Untick it to print the puzzle only.
Can I save the word search as a PDF?
Yes. Press Print / Save PDF and choose “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the printer. The puzzle is sized to fit one Letter or A4 page.
How do I get the same puzzle again?
Copy the share link. It holds a seed and all your settings, so opening it rebuilds exactly the same grid and answer key on any device. Press “New puzzle” for a fresh grid with the same settings.
Are my words sent anywhere?
No. The puzzle is made in your browser. Your words stay on your device and in the share link only if you choose to copy it.
